Made-to-measure curtains in Rotterdam
A made-to-measure curtain is determined by several connected choices. The dimensions influence the amount of fabric. The fabric weight influences the pleat and rail. Transparency influences privacy, while lining can change volume, light control and appearance.
During the selection process, TULAY considers:
- the width and height of the window;
- daylight and the direction of the sun;
- privacy during the day and evening;
- fabric composition, weight and fall;
- pattern repeat and colour placement;
- the required pleat and fabric fullness;
- lining and finishing;

Types of curtains
Overcurtains
Overcurtains add privacy, colour and visual softness. Depending on the fabric and lining, they can be decorative, light-controlling or more substantial. They can be used alone or combined with an inbetween or sheer.
Inbetween curtains
Inbetweens sit between a very transparent sheer and a dense overcurtain. They filter daylight and generally provide more visual screening than a sheer while keeping the room light.
Sheer curtains
Sheer curtains soften daylight and add a fine textile layer in front of the window. The degree of transparency depends on colour, weave and density.
Roman blinds
A Roman blind combines fabric with a compact lifting system. Not every curtain fabric is suitable: weight, thickness, stability and pattern placement must work with the system.
Curtain pleats and wave systems
The pleat affects both appearance and the amount of fabric. A single pleat creates a relatively compact look. A double pleat gives more rhythm and fullness. A wave curtain hangs in regular curves and requires the fabric, runners and rail to work together.

Choosing the curtain fabric
View curtain fabric vertically and against the light whenever possible. Open weaves, linen textures, velvet surfaces and dense fabrics all react differently to daylight. The same colour can look significantly different when the fabric is gathered into full curtains.

Preparing for curtain advice
Before visiting, take a clear photo of the complete window and another showing the wider room. Approximate width and height measurements help with the first comparison; they are not a substitute for the final dimensions required for production.
Also consider:
- whether privacy or daylight is the priority;
- whether the curtain should reach the floor;
- how often the curtains will be opened and closed;
- whether a lining is required;
- the colours and materials already present in the room;
- the atmosphere you want: light, natural, calm, rich or expressive.
